U Lead Intensive

April 5, 12, 26, and May 3 — 3 to 5pm at Portland High School

The U Lead Intensive is an 8-hour experiential course for Portland-area youth to find deeper connection with their own purpose and how to connect their purpose to action. The world needs leaders with this kind of deep, critical awareness.

The Intensive dives into an hands-on study of why we find ourselves faced with problems such as climate change, war, school violence, and plummeting mental health, and how a new kind of purposeful awareness is needed to put the world on a different path, starting with each of us and how we show up.

Students leave with a deeper connection to themselves, confidence to tackle issues important to them, and tools for change making that use deep stakeholder engagement and learning by doing. The Intensive is a prerequisite for the U Change Portland Cohort.

Students who fully participate and complete the U Lead Intensive receive a stipend of $150.

Dinner and snacks provided. Transportation support may be available.

CLOSED for April Session. We will hold another session in September.

Theory U for Youth

uses emergent pedagogy to teach students about leadership through taking action on current topics that are of vital importance to them. We situate the work within the concepts that were originated by Dr. Otto Scharmer.

Theory U: Leading from the Future as it Emerges

The U Lead Intensive is a 8-hour course, which dives into an experiential study of the root causes of our current multi-sector crisis and the path forward toward individual and collective thriving. Students leave with a deeper connection to themselves, confidence to tackle issues important to them, and tools for change making that use deep stakeholder engagement and iterative prototyping processes. It will be offered in Spring 2023. Maximum of twelve participants.

2023-2024 U Change Portland cohort begins with a U Lead Intensive. Those who want to continue on and use the learning in real projects to transform their school’s policies and/or culture, will form teams to dive into specific issues of concern this spring and begin the U Change cohort in September 2023.

The U Change cohort, is a yearlong experience for a team of students to focus on a specific problem within their community. Students move from identifying a problem through a mixed-methods, hands-on, creative research process to a set of vetted and prioritized prototype solutions that can be experimented with immediately. The process can be repeated over multiple years in the same setting, giving students the opportunity to develop project teams to iterate solutions over time. Maximum of twelve participants.

The work continues…2021-2022-2023 U Change cohort at Portland High School researched the invisibility many Hispanic and Latino/x students feel at school. We participated in U.Lab 2x through the Presencing Institute and involved stakeholders including students, parents, community members, educators, and school district administration in finding solutions. The results of our hard work showed in the summer workshop when a group of school stakeholders identified potential prototypes for implementation this year at Portland High School and in October we held an all-staff workshop to further vet potential prototype solutions and now implementing solutions as a part of the Equity Committee and through other ongoing initiatives. We are excited to announce that an end-of-year Graduation Celebration for Hispanic and Latino/x families and students will be happening!

The U Leadership Intensive and U Change cohorts meet in person. If you live outside the Portland area but are interested in these groups, let us know.
